Choir Introduction

Music at Saint Jean Baptiste

The most important aspect of the music ministry at the Church of St. Jean Baptiste is its focus on the celebration of the liturgy.  In the Eucharistic celebration, we strive to sing as one voice with the assistance of choirs, cantors, organist and instrumentalists. In addition, the Music Series features concerts of choral, organ and instrumental programs.

The Assembly As One Voice

Every time the Parish of Saint Jean’s gathers to celebrate the liturgy, we sing as one voice and function as the primary choir.  The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002) emphasizes the importance of congregational singing:

“The Christian faithful who gather together as one to await the Lord’s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (cf. Col 3:16). Singing is the sign of the heart’s joy (cf. Acts 2:46). Thus St. Augustine says rightly, “Singing is for one who loves.” There is also the ancient proverb: “One who sings well prays twice.”

The U. S. Bishops approved a document on music and liturgy, Sing to the Lord,  in November 2007. For more information on this document and the Church’s instruction relating to congregational singing, click here.
